The Conference Story

Exceptionally cool weather greeted 245 attendees as they descended on Providence for the 10th Annual NAME Conference.

On the first day of the 2012 Conference, attendees participated in the Introduction to Medicaid and Education (The Academy) in the afternoon and then attended Regional Town Hall meetings that evening. These provided an overview of “Meducaid” as well as an opportunity for attendees from around the country to meet, share and network with others from their geographic regions. Attendees included 27 State Medicaid Agency, 35 State Education Agency, 84 Local Education Agency, 57 Associate Members, 39 Sponsor representatives and 3 CMS staff. Four of the six education Regional Resource Centers (RRCs) sent staff as well and NAME is looking forward to working with the RRCs on Medicaid and Education related issues.

Our first full day included a keynote address meant to inspire all of us with the experience of 4 young men as they journeyed across America in search of inspirational stories of athletes overcoming physical odds to surf, sail, bike, climb mountains…In the afternoon, Dr. David Keller provided an overview of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its impact on children. Attendees spent the afternoon at their choice of breakout sessions on topics ranging from time studies, to audits and beyond.

Our second full day was a mix of federal updates from our partners at the National Association of Directors of Special Education, American Association of School Administrators, the Council of Administrators of Special Education, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the U.S. Department of Education. They shared with us their knowledge and insight into what is happening in Washington in regards to Medicaid and Education. The questions and answers from the CMS and DOE presentations will be published on the NAME web page as soon as they are available.

Other featured speakers at general sessions included Deb Florio, RI Office of Health and Human Services and Angela Sherwin, RI Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner, who provided an overview of ACA implementation in RI, including the creation of Health Exchanges, coordinating commercial and public programs.
